Difference between real genuine leather and fake/bicast/synthetic leather

Furniture, especially your sofa, could almost be considered as a member of your family. Your sofa is the centerpiece of your living room. Anchoring your space, it is the cozy place you watch a movie with your loved ones. It’s the soft and cushioned surface that your child’s tiny hand uses for balance, as they learn to take their first steps. Purchasing the piece that will become all, this isn’t something that one does carelessly. Buying any piece of furniture for your home is an investment and as such, you want high quality craftsmanship that will last.

When you’re buying a sofa, you’re faced with a lot of decisions to make in terms of materials, and they can be overwhelming. Here we’ll discuss the difference between artificial leather, vinyl and genuine cow leather.

Synthetic leather is a designation referring to many different man-made materials which have a leather-like surface. Often, this material is muslin coated with boiled linseed oil and then dyed. This mixture is layered over cotton and pressed until fused, before being treated with a copal varnish and embossed with artificial grain.

Vinyl is a form of plastic which is chemically produced and then treated and processed until it is a fabric like material. It then undergoes a similar process as the artificial leather, being dyed, varnished and embossed with an artificial grain.

At Boss Sofas we offer high quality craftsman ship by using only genuine cow leather. We do not use vinyl, bicast or other synthetic materials. Such poor quality choices are common for sofas, and people often buy them thinking that it’s better to spend less in case something were to happen to their new furniture, but what they do not realise is that low quality materials often cannot stand up to even regular wear and tear. Genuine cow leather is naturally durable, flexible and is able to withstand all that life can throw at it. At Boss Sofas, we take nature’s most durable fabric and turn it into high quality, gorgeous living room furniture, designed to last.

Among the various types of genuine leather, corrected grain leather is the most common type of leather used at Boss Sofas. This beautiful leather is ideal for stained and dyed upholstery, as it has been treated so that the grain appears uniform and sleek, creating a beautiful and sturdy backdrop for the range of hues that our couches are available in.

Our leather is sourced from an Australian supplier because we believe in the importance of supporting our family of Australian businesses, while we create the furniture that becomes a part of your family.
